Dursley & District Athletic Club
Dursley Dozen 10 February 2008
Dear Runner,
This is the twentieth year that we have run this event and it continues to prove to be an enjoyable annual feature. In past years ago we have provided a liberal dose of fallen trees, sometimes some excellent mud; only time will tell what this year's special attraction will be. Otherwise the course is unchanged!
This document gives information for the day of the race. Please read it: it is important for the smooth running of the event that the instructions are followed.
Have a good race !
How to get there.
The start of the race is very close to the centre of Dursley. For those competitors who are not local, the best approaches are as follows:
From the south: leave the M5 at Junction 14, travel north on the A38 for 5 miles then turn right and follow the signs to Dursley.
From the north: leave the M5 at Junction 13, travel south on the A38 for about 3 miles then turn left and follow the signs to Dursley.
From the east: the A4135 from Tetbury leads straight to the town centre.

Parking
There are adequate car parks at the sports centre & school within five minutes walk of the start, and very close to the town centre. Please do NOT use the May Lane car park (this will be used to assemble the runners) or park on the roads near the start. The main race car park will be at the sports centre. If this is full, then use the large car park to the rear of the swimming pool, accessed from Castle Street. Please make your way to the start along The Knapp, through the Castle Street car park and up May Lane.
Changing & Showers
Changing facilities are available in the sports centre close to the start and finish. Plastic bags will be available for clothing to be dropped at the start, and will be taken to the finish. Any items left will be at the competitors own risk.
The start
Competitors should assemble in the May Lane car park (opposite the Old Spot pub, close to the north end of the pedestrianised shopping street). Please be there ready by 10.25 am for any pre-race announcements. The race will start promptly from the car park at 10.30 am.
After the Race.
Drinks and refreshments will be available in the sports centre. A bar will be available to runners and their families.
Prizes
T-shirts to all entrants.
The awards ceremony will take place at the sports centre at 1.15pm or so.
Results
Results envelopes will be available before and after the race & will be posted on the web page.
Footwear
This is a multi-terrain race. Parts of the course are very steep, slippery and muddy, and shoes with a good grip should be worn. As there are several miles of road, spikes are not suitable.
Safety arrangements
All of the stretches of road on which the race takes place are unfenced and very quiet. Please observe the normal rules of traffic and obey any instructions given by the police or marshals. If you injure yourself or see anyone hurt please contact the nearest marshal. Vehicles will collect any exhausted or hurt competitors on the road stretches. Consult a marshal if you need a lift to the finish. There will be a first aid post at the finish.
Spectating
By walking up to the golf course after the start the runners can be seen at 1 mile for fast walkers, 3 miles and 10 miles. The quickest way is to follow 'the Broadway' from the start and head straight up through the woods following the Cotswold Way signs.
Cut-off time
For the first time we are going to close the course to any competitor who does not reach the 7½ mile mark by 12.00. The winners will already have showered and judging from the last few years’ results it should affect less than 5 competitors. This has been introduced because towards the end of a race of this length the officials are having to wait for a few competitors for a long time. We are sorry to have to do this but if you feel it may affect you, then you are still welcome, but we would ask you to tell us beforehand and we will arrange an earlier start. The course will be marked out, but the first few marshals will not be in position, nor will there be any first aid cover until 10.30am..
Acknowledgements
Much of the course is through private woodlands and access has been granted for the purposes of the race only. We gratefully acknowledge the owners for consenting to allow us to use their land. Thanks are also due to the following people and organisations without whom this event would not be possible.
All those who have given up their Sunday to help.
All those who have turned up to run.
